Nick’s Game Diary Week of Jan. 7, 2024

A weekly diary of the things I’m doing and digging.

I got on a new(ish) album kick to start the year out. This usually happens every few months after I’ve grown a bit tired of my podcast rotation. Some standouts so far

Black Moth Super Rainbow - I think this came through my Spotify algorithm because I listened to Andre 3000’s new flute album. No matter, I’m loving the hell out of this synthy, hippie, lo-fi.

Sexxy Red - A fellow St. Louisan. I even get a shoutout in one of the later tracks.

Lana Del Rey - Lana went all out on her latest. Jesus (literally Jesus) she really left it all out in the recording booth on this one.

I’m sure I’ll have more to share later in the week.

In other exciting news, some of my work from Hard Drive is starting to trickle out. This collaboration features two of my entries. My first article actually came out January 6. Awesome!

My first full article for Hard Drive!

Tonight I’ll be recording with David Arnold and the Gimmicks crew. We’re talking 30 Rock more specifically the Queen of Jordan episodes.

New ep out today! Trying something new with the titles. SEO be damned, but I do think having the titles of things we talk about in the episode will help drive people in who want to hear about a certain game.

Jeez. Firewatch came out eight years ago. I am also old. I continue on through my early-30s today. I’ve got to say I am a big fan of less people using Facebook to wish me a happy birthday! This is the first years where the text meassages and phone calls outnumbered social media wall posts.

A few more new (to me) music standouts:

grouptherapy - I don’t think there’s a skip on this album.

Charli XCX - Not my first vendture into Charli’s music, but my first full album listen. I’ve been listening to gone for years now. Hard to believe I’ve slept on the rest of this album.

A quick trip to Chicago has left my back in shambles. I’m not the spry 20-something driver anymore. I forget about the temperature difference between STL and Chicago until I get out of the car for the first time up north. A quick check on the teeth and a quick lunch with a friend. Ten hour drives suck but its always good to see a friendly face on the other end of it.

Go check out my Dave the Diver Hard Drive piece and my Game Chronicle review for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

We’re only 12 days into the new year, but that Prince is going to be on a bunch of GOTY list. I can already see it. It’s just a well made game from a developer that looks to be bouncing back from some so-so years. Hats off to the dev team.
