Josh Coffman’s Top 10 Games of 2023

Josh shares his favorites from the year, which is way better than Nick’s.

10. DeadSpace Remake

Deadspace was not only a horror staple in the Xbox 360 days, but it was the first horror game I enjoyed of that era. I spent many sleepless nights working through the acheivements of the original game. So of course, once the remake was released, I had a nostalgic return to my achievement hunting ways.

9. Resident Evil 4: Remake

Just like Deadspace, Resident Evil 4 Remake is a modern spin on a cult classic. Yes, the world is tired of remakes and remasters, but Remake gave us what we loved about the original with all the added benefits of the RE Engine.

8. Honkai: Star Rail

Genshin Impact made a huge impact before COVID-19 gripped the world into lockdown. Now in 4.0, the gatcha still has a huge following for being the world’s answer to the Nintendo-locked Breathe of the Wild. The Hoyoverse had decided that they wanted to try something different and came out with Honkai: Star Rail. Definitely a fun new story with some old and new takes on the turn-based genre.

7. Remnant 2

Remnant was a hidden gem a few years back. It was nice to see a sequel come out and build upon that original game.

6. Elderand

A hidden gem that started the year strong, there is a lot to love about this Metroidvania. Memorable bosses, great weapon selection, and beautiful surroundings. It kept me hooked enough to grab all achievements and another blue ribbon on my Steam Deck!

5. Octopath Traveler 2

Anyone who knows me understands my love for JRPGs. Especially if they are turn-based. So when I saw Octopath Traveler 2 was out, I immediately grabbed a copy and played well into many mornings. Just like its predecessor, the characters are well-developed, the stories are captivating, and the fighting is something all JRPGs should strive for.

4. Final Fantasy 16

For those catching on, I love Square Enix! They aren’t perfect, but they give us gems like Final Fantasy 16. The story is engrossing, the cinematics are beautiful, and the music is ear wormy. I’m honestly all in for Game of Thrones meets Kaijus.

3. Forspoken

So this one might seem weird to be so high on the list, but this game deserves some praise. People were so quick to join the bandwagon of hating the voice acting. Sure it has some rough edges, but those who stopped a few hours in missed a great adventure.

2. Savant Ascent Remix

Music has a huge impact on my decision-making. So of course Savant made a huge impact on me as the whole OST is on my playlist. This rail shooter/bullet hell with a twist brings much joy and anger in many new forms of pleasure.

  1. Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon

Mechs fighting other mechs. Need I say more?
